Objects play a powerful role in story, and some even have their own arc. This workshop is all about a meeting with a powerful object with implications for your character, whether that’s a clue in crime, an inheritance, an opportunity, a secret or an object with magical implications.
You’ll need pen and paper or the notes app on your phone,. The first few minutes will be a writing warm up. Then I’ll talk a little about why I chose the topic and why it’s interesting for writers and we’ll get to the main writing session.
During the writing sessions I’ll speak about every 2 to 5 minutes. The idea is that I keep track of time so you can concentrate on the writing. Towards the end of the main exercise I’ll give you an opportunity to press pause, so you can write for longer if you like. Then I’ll invite you to reflect on your writing.
If you have any feedback feel free to leave comments, on Substack (I know lots of you are listening on Apple and Spotify).
If you want more writing to follow this workshop you could try Rejection, all about what happens to characters when they can’t get what they want, or Poison, to play with secrets, lies, misunderstandings, malicious gossip and manipulation.
